It’s Not Too Late for a Flu Vaccine Community Flu Vaccine Clinic Tuesday, March 4

(RENO, Nev.), February 26, 2014— In an effort to help prevent the spread of influenza and remind people that it’s not too late to get a flu vaccine, Immunize Nevada and the Washoe County Health District are partnering to offer a community flu clinic on Tuesday, March 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Career College of Northern Nevada, 1421 Pullman Drive in Sparks. Flu vaccines (both mist and shots) are available on a first come, first serve basis. A $20 donation is requested to cover the cost of the vaccine, however no one will be turned away due to inability to pay. No identification is required for a vaccine, however those with insurance should bring a copy of their cards.

Last week the CDC reported that the influenza virus has targeted younger and middle-age adults this season. People age 18-64 represent 61 percent of all hospitalizations from influenza—up from the previous three seasons when this age group represented only about 35 percent of all such hospitalizations. Influenza deaths are following the same pattern; more deaths than usual occurred in this age group.

A second CDC report shows that influenza vaccination offered substantial protection against the flu this season, reducing a vaccinated person’s risk of having to go to the doctor for flu illness by about 60 percent across all ages.

“This year’s flu season really underscores to younger people the fact that influenza is a serious disease for all ages,” said Heidi Parker, Immunize Nevada Executive Director. “The reality is that influenza is unpredictable and anyone can contract this disease. This year’s flu season is not over. If you haven’t gotten a vaccine yet, it’s not too late to protect yourself and those around you.”

In addition to the clinic next week, there are still several options for those still seeking a vaccine. Many health plans and healthcare providers, including the Washoe County Health District and local pharmacies still have flu vaccine available. More information, including the “Flu Vaccine Map Finder” is available at www.influencenevada.org/healthcare-providers.
